DESIGN A GREAT LOGO
(written by Anything Creative)
Once you’ve decided to start your own business, the first step is normally to have your logo designed. Never underestimate the importance of your logo, as this will be the representation of your company and will most likely be the one thing that client’s will use to recall your brand.
When planning your logo with your graphic designer, always bear the following in mind.
- Don’t just design your logo, as you will live your logo. Your business will become what you say it stands for.
- Keep your logo simple.
- Use no more than 3 colours in your logo. Whilst some exceptional logos have been designed with more colours, these have been few and far between. The general rule is keep it under 3 for maximum effect. These 3 colours should also become your company colours and should be used on all marketing material.
- Easy to read text is vital. Whilst swirls and swishes are pretty, they do not make for easy reading. Think of your logo on a billboard on a highway (not during peak traffic), potential customers have a second to be able to read your logo and continue driving.
- Use relevant imagery in your logo. Give your customers an idea of what your business does, just by looking at the logo. Obviously you don’t have to go to in-depth, but if you sell equipment to fisherman, include imagery of a fish or a fishing rod in your logo.
- Create a tagline and incorporate it into your logo. This too will provide customers with a clear indication of what you do.
- To help the graphic designer understand what you envisage, provide samples of logos you’ve seen before and liked. This will save a lot of time in the design process.
